Documents

Add documents to a case and keep track of what's been read.

Supported files

  • PDF
  • Word (.docx). Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx or PDF first.
  • Excel (.xlsx, .xls)
  • Text (.txt)
  • Images (PNG, JPG, TIFF)

Scanned PDFs and images need OCR (text recognition). OCR is included on Pro and Pro Unlimited. On the Free plan, a scanned document shows as Failed with a note that OCR isn't available on your plan.

The largest file you can upload is 25 MB on Free, 100 MB on Pro and 250 MB on Pro Unlimited.

Adding documents

  1. Open the case and go to Documents.
  2. Click Add documents, or drop files anywhere on the section.
  3. The upload tray shows each file uploading, then being read and indexed.

You can keep working while documents process. Ask can use each document as soon as it's ready. Long or scanned records take longer than short text documents.

Working with the list

  • Search by name to find a document.
  • Category filters (Medical, Bills, Police, Depositions, Court filings and so on) appear once the case has documents in more than one category. Categories are assigned automatically.
  • A badge shows documents that are Queued, Processing or Failed. Documents without a badge are ready.
  • Click a document to open it. From there you can view the original, open it in a new tab, and reprocess it if it failed.

Deleting a document

Click the trash icon next to a document and confirm. The file and everything extracted from it are permanently removed from the case. Rebuild any analyses that relied on it.

If a document fails

  • Make sure the file isn't password-protected or damaged.
  • Check it's within your plan's file size limit.
  • If it's a scan and you're on Free, it needs OCR, which comes with Pro.
  • Open the document and reprocess it, or upload it again.
